A glimpse behind the curtain
Peek behind the curtain!
Many of you are new, so I decided to start off the month with a glimpse behind the curtain. As you read about me, look for clues to tell you where I’m from.
The Brain Storm got its name from the neurological storms that occur during both Migraine and Cluster Headache attacks. I have been living with Migraine for 40 years. Cluster Headache is a relative newcomer, making its debut just 15 years ago. The blog got its start in 2012 as documentation of my journey to finally find effective treatment for both conditions. It has gone through several transformations, including at least three name changes, before finally settling into its current format.
As you can imagine, life hasn’t always been filled with rainbows and butterflies. At times I have felt very afraid. Sometimes I don’t think clearly, struggle to communicate, and act like I don’t even have a brain. Coming out of an attack leaves me feeling like I’ve been through a tornado and had a house dropped on me. A few years ago I was also diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. Sometimes I wake up stiff and sore, as though I’ve been left out in the rain and my joints have rusted out.
Both conditions can bring out the worst in me. Fortunately I have good friends who tolerate me, a family who support me a lot more than I deserve, and a loyal dog who rarely leaves my side.
Trying to find just the right treatments has been a challenging journey. Some of the treatments had nasty side effects that were worse than being attacked by flying monkeys. More than once, a treatment made me so sleepy I felt like I’d been knocked out in a poppy field. At times I wished someone would wave a magic wand to make it all disappear like a bad dream.
When I finally did meet the right doctor, it felt like coming home. Now I never, ever want to leave.
